3.0.9 install locks up fresh J2.5 install

Server: PHP 5.6, Apache, MariaDB 5.5

Download Joomla 2.5.28 and install
Download Fabrik 3.0.9 and install

Install locks up with a white page. PHP error is generated on any page access

PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '$to' (T_VARIABLE), expecting function (T_FUNCTION) in /public_html/administrator/components/com_fabrik/helpers/fabrik.php on line 97

Is there a version of this that actually works? I realize it's an old version, but since I'm trying to migrate a J1.5 site to J3.7, and since Fabrik will not go from 2.1 to 3.7, unless someone has a better method than what's in the documentation, it would be nice if this actually worked. I looked at the github repo, but the releases don't seem to include packages, just zips of the release tag.

This combination is/was working. I assume it's the php version which is "to new".
But migrating from J!1.5/Fabrik2.1 to J!2.5/Fabrik3.0.9 is a lot of manuell work and tests.
Then you have to migrate to J!3/Fabrik3.1+

Probably it's easier to start with clean latest Joomla and Fabrik and rebuild your Fabrik application manually.

• Migrating from J!1.5.20+/Fabrik2.1
• Migrating Fabrik3.0.9 to Fabrik3.1+ (J!3.4+)
