placeholders shown instead of values in calc element

Hi, I am using a calc element in a table (matches):
it just concatenates two values with this code
Code:
return '{matches___hteam}'.' - '.'{matches___ateam}';

It "usually" works, like in my fullcalendar viz, but if I try to show it in a simple list it remains in form of placeholders. The hteam and ateam elements are ids from a joined teams table.
I've set the calc element to always render, what else may I be missing?

Thank you

When you say "always render" do you mean literally the "always render" option (present for all elements), or the "Only calc on save" setting set to No?

The "Always Render" in element> list view settings>list settings
I think that every element has it.

"Only calc on save" setting is set to no.
I tried also ajax calc with "Calc on load" Yes, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

If this may ring some bell, I am using this element in a "child list". I "unlinked" the element so that I might play with the settings without breaking the working list.
Should I do it with the elements I am applying the calc too?

thank you

We are in need of some funding.

Thank you.
