When you set a PHP validation on an element, you get the little star and the message "field required".
However, it is not always that the field is required: you can have a PHP code run when there is a data entered but allow the field to be left blank. In that case, the "field required" message is confusing for the user.
I am not sure how to deal with that. Maybe the best way is to not display the star + message, just have the error message shown in the case of a failed validation.
