How do we designate a field (linked drop down) to available only on create but NOT on edit?

That's currently not an entirely trivial thing to do, as we don't provide a built in way to do that. It's something we've been meaning to do for a while, improving the visibility controls.
Let me talk to Rob, and get back to you. I think it's time we bit the bullet and built this in as a standard setting.

Hide a field on edit versus create
As an alternative, is there a way that I could have a field that displays a value which shows up only in edit mode and hide the field that I want to lock in edit mode. In other words, Can I have one field which displays only on create and another field which displays only on edit?
