When using "related data " columns in a master list the sublist record counts show OK. Clicking that "count" link I got the sublist in a modal window. Fine. Clicking one of the links in this sublist, the record does not show in another modal window as expected but instead in a new page. Because the sublist is defined to have "toggle" columns. Setting toggling to OFF everything works fine.
The final clue to find the problem was:
When showing master list I got this js error in list-min.js. "Uncaught ReferenceError: FbListToggle is not defined"
Any clue?
