Good question:
I hit the same thing myself... It's because PHP distinguished variable/value names by case (I.E. case sensitive, so to PHP SOlocation and solocation are *not* the same), while the MySQL database engine is *not* case sensitive by default. That can cause a lot of problems, so the system forces all names to be in lower case as the matching fields in the DB will be created as lowercase anyway.
Labels can be Upper Case etc, just not element names.
Speaking of Labels, if you go to the Tables Section, then click "Parameters" you can specify that you want to use the WYSIWYG for labels, gives you a lot of flexibility in formatting your labels
