Make list remember the order set by the user

There is a list that has a default ordering.
The list can be re-ordered manually by the user on some other fields.
Then the user clicks to edit one record.
After saving the user returns back to the list.
But the list has returned to its default ordering.
Is there any chance to make the list remember the previously order as set by the user? Similarly like the components' lists work in the backend of Joomla?
